Summary
There are three editions of the collected works of Stefan George. The eighteen-volume Gesamt-Ausgabe der Werke, endgültige Fassung was arranged by George himself, published by the Georg Bondi Verlag in Berlin between 1927 and 1934, and reprinted in a reduced format by the Küpper Verlag between 1964 and 1969. In 1958 the Küpper Verlag in Munich and Düsseldorf published the Werke. Ausgabe in zwei Bänden, edited by Robert Boehringer. This two-volume edition contains all the texts of the eighteen-volume edition, but not the illustrations and appendices of the original edition. The two-volume edition was reprinted with additional texts from George's literary estate (Nachlaß) in 1968, 1976, and, edited by Georg Peter Landmann, in 1984 by the Klett-Cotta Verlag in Stuttgart. Since the Werke: Ausgabe in zwei Bänden is the most accessible edition, references (by volume and page number) in this Companion, unless otherwise noted, are to this edition. Since 1982 the Klett-Cotta Verlag has been publishing a new edition with appendices, Sämtliche Werke in 18 Bänden, edited by Georg Peter Landmann and Ute Oelmann. To date, thirteen volumes have been published.
Unless otherwise noted, translations of the titles of George's volumes of poetry and of individual poems are taken from Olga Marx and Ernst Morwitz, trans., The Works of Stefan George: Rendered into English. 2nd, revised and enlarged edition (Chapel Hill, NC: U of North Carolina P, 1974).
George's journal Blätter für die Kunst, whose nominal editor was
C. A. Klein, was published between 1892 and 1919 in twelve volumes. Küpper Verlag published a complete reprint in six volumes with an introduction by Robert Boehringer in 1968. Unless otherwise noted, references in this Companion are to this edition and will be abbreviated BfdK, followed by volume number (and, where appropriate, issue number) and page number.

Stefan George (1868-1933) is along with Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Rainer Maria Rilke one of the pre-eminent German poets of the twentieth century. He also had an important, albeit controversial and provocative role in German cultural history. It is generally agreed that he played a significant part in the transition of German literature to Modernism, particularly in poetry. At the same time he was an outspoken critic of modernity. He believed that only an all-encompassing cultural renewal could save modern man. Although George is often linked with the l'art pour l'art movement, and although his artistic consciousness was formed by European aestheticism, his poetry and the writings that emerged from the poets and intellectuals he gathered around him in the George Circle are above all a scathing commentary on the political, social, and cultural situation in Germany at the turn of the century.
George, who was imbued with the idea of the poet as a prophet and priest, saw himself as the Messiah of a New Hellenism and a New Reich led by an intellectual and aesthetic elite consisting of men who were bonded together through their allegiance to a charismatic leader. Some of the values that George proclaimed, among them a glorification of power, of heroism and self-sacrifice, were seized upon by the National Socialists, and subsequently his writings and those of his circle were considered by some to be proto-fascist. It did not help his reputation that after the Second World War much of the criticism of his works was practiced by uncritical, hagiographic George worshippers. In recent years, however, there has been a renewed and unbiased interest among scholars and critics in George and his circle. The wide-ranging and original essays in this volume explore anew George's poetry and his contribution to Modernism, the relation between his vision of a New Reich and fascist ideology, and his importance as a cultural critic.
Jens Rieckmann is Professor of German at the University of California, Irvine.

Summary
Introduction
Immunohistochemistry is an indispensible diagnostic tool in the study of lung tumors. It may be helpful as a supplement to morphology in classifying primary lung tumours. This subclassification is increasingly important, as emerging therapeutic options demand increasing diagnostic exactitude. The technique is also invaluable in deciding whether a tumor, particularly an adenocarcinoma, is a pulmonary primary or arises from an extra-pulmonary site. If metastatic, immunohistochemical stains can also often determine the primary site.
However, immunohistochemistry has limitations. No marker is absolutely specific or absolutely sensitive. Since the exact conditions of tissue fixation, antigen retrieval and staining vary between laboratories, diagnostic laboratories do not exactly reproduce the conditions of the published studies. Deciding whether a tumor shows positive staining also has an element of subjectivity. Cut-off levels vary between studies and often involve a combination of staining intensity and proportion of cells stained, for which there is no universally agreed scoring system. Some antibodies, when applied to some tumors, have given rise to hundreds of reported cases with consistent results. Published results with other antibodies and tumors have given varied results for reasons that may or may not be apparent. Particularly for less common pulmonary or extra-pulmonary tumors, the published data may be sparse in the extreme. The corpus of published data is immense and ever growing, particularly as tissue microarrays have the potential to examine hundreds of tumors within the scope of one study.
